Sea Freight Knowledge Base
The BoldProject Knowledge Base explains the terms, delivery terms (Incoterms) and container sizes used in sea freight, in plain language.
Sea freight terms
Sea freight has its own vocabulary. Terms such as freight (the price of carrying the cargo), container types and bills of lading describe how a shipment is priced, packed and documented. Knowing them helps you read a quote and compare offers.
Delivery terms (Incoterms)
Incoterms are international rules that say who pays for and who carries the risk of each stage of a shipment, for example loading, main transport, insurance and import clearance. Agree the Incoterm with your buyer or seller before you ask for a quote.
Container sizes
The container type decides how much cargo fits and what it costs. Tell us the dimensions and weight of your cargo and we will suggest the container type that suits it.

Frequently asked questions
What are Incoterms?
Incoterms are international rules that define who is responsible for the cost and risk at each stage of a shipment, from loading to import clearance.
What is the difference between FCL and LCL?
In FCL the container belongs to one shipper. In LCL the cargo of several shippers is combined in one container and each shipper pays for the space its cargo occupies.
How do I choose a container type?
It depends on the size, weight and kind of your cargo. Send us the dimensions and weight and we will suggest the container type. See the Container Dimensions page for the sizes.
